Connemara Castles

Day 3:

Today we said “goodbye” to our friends at Cahergal Farmhouse and headed north to County Galway.  We drove on a motorway most of the way to Galway city which was a lot like driving on our interstate roads.  Driving in Galway city, however, was pretty intense for this small-town girl with lots of traffic and roundabouts, but, we made it without incident! Whew!

Our first stop was at Connemara Marble in the village of Moycullen where we found some lovely jewelry & gifts made from various shades of green Connemara marble as well as marble from other areas of Ireland.

After a bite for lunch, we headed on to Aughnanure Castle which was built by the O’Flaherty clan in the 1500’s near the shores of Lough Corrib.  The castle does not have many period furnishings, but it was really interesting to compare this smaller tower house to Bunratty Castle.

Mom and I were also intrigued because we were starting to learn about Grace O’Malley who was a 16th-century Pirate Queen and head of the O’Malley clan.  Her first husband was one of the sons of the O’Flaherty chieftain .  So, we knew that it was likely that she has spent some time at this castle during the early years of her life.

Here’s a slideshow and a video tour of the inside of the castle, as well as some videos taken outside.

We continued our adventure further into the Connemara region of County Galway driving through gorgeous, rugged countryside and villages on our way to Ballynahinch Castle where we spoiled ourselves with a  bit of a luxurious stay for the evening.  The roads in this area of the country are very curvy and narrow (at least compared to our Kansas roads).

Unfortunately, that resulted in some struggles with motion-sickness for us.  But, what a gorgeous drive and Ballynahinch was amazing as well!!  What a beautiful location that I hope to visit again someday!  Here are some slideshows and videos for ya.

Check back for Day 4 as we head to the town of Clifden and the lovely Mallmore Country House near the shores of Clifden Bay.

God’s Blessings & Joy Be To You,
