Spectacular Scenes on the Ring of Kerry
We had an early start on Day 11 as we drove to Killarney to meet our small bus tour for the Ring of Kerry drive. The Ring of Kerry is a driving route that tours the Iveragh Peninsula. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland. So, we opted to let someone else drive! Ha!! I’m glad we did. Our driver, Michael, was very entertaining and informative. As some of the people in our group were taking a different tour for part of the afternoon to Micheal Skellig Island, we drove the Ring of Kerry in the opposite direction as most people and started with Ladies View overlooking the three lakes of Killarney National Park. What a stunning view!
Other highlights of the drive included an ancient Celtic Ring Fort and standing stone circle, Waterville where Charlie Chaplin used to vacation, Portmagee where we bumped into our new friends from Wales who were also touring the Ring of Kerry that day, an old slate quarry and grotto on Valentia Island, and views of the Skellig Islands including Michael Skellig where part of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were filmed. The thing I find really fascinating about Michael Skellig though is that it was once home to monks in the 9th century who created the stone steps & bee-hive huts seen in the movies, and eked out an existence in this really harsh terrain in order to be closer to God. Just amazing!!
Check back for Day 12 as we visit the Gap of Dunloe, Ross Castle, and Torc Waterfall.
